I hooked up the ux16, and loaded what i think are updates, but was not sure. i did the bulk dump anyway, and left the midi cord plugged in so as to disturb the connection to the drive.  i did disconnect the power supply.  after carefully changing the battery with a plastic pick, i turned the unit on and my settings were undisturbed. apparently, the low voltage from the usb/midi kept the memory in tact so i did not have to reload my settings.

I wouldn't risk changing it with the power on without having seen a circuit for the module - if you damage the module it would be an expensive mistake.  You should be able to find your missing drivers on the net to back up your system, but unless you have some reason to believe the battery is dead I would leave it alone.  If you have a multimeter you could possibly measure the voltage across it while in-situ if you are concerned about it.
