Otherwise, if you have a multimeter you could try to see what the rims of the pads do. My guess is that they are rim switches but as they use four jacks and the function of the jack changes when you plug another jack in it suggests some switching is going on, but I am not sure what. There are free/low cost programs which allow you to look at signals like an oscilloscope using a PC audio input which may help find out what is going on (or obviously an oscilloscope if you have one!).
