Happy New Year! Nice to see the posts coming in again. First of all, let me say well done Andrew for coming up with the drum voice-change tips. The pad-song problem (when it plays back as piano) was certainly frustrating. I actually figured it out only yesterday and was about to post the solution when you beat me to it! Channel 6! Who'd have guessed that! Actually, I spotted it with my MIDI analyser. I used the analyser to arrive at Andrew's fix - but also noticed some weird things: We all know that some preset kits contain pad-songs, eg. 32(GroovKit). I noticed that these kits send Control Change and Program Change messages to certain channels, eg. 32(GroovKit) sends PC & CC messages to channels 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 and 14 33(Bs.@Base) sends stuff to channels 4, 6, 11 and 14. You can check this out by selecting kit 32(GroovKit) and hitting the crash - this will play a cheesy bass gtr riff. Change SONG channel 11, V(Bank Select) to "drumV". The bass riff changes to drums! The problem with all this is that it can screw up. Change the setting back to "meldy" - it's now a piano sound! What's all that about?!? Now reboot the brain and get back to that cheesy bass riff. When you hit the crash pad, out come MIDI notes on Ch.11. No problem, except when you hit the pad again (to stop the riff) the brain sends "controller reset" messages to channels 11,12,13 AND 14!! WHY!!! Similarly, the ride cymbal has a Blues Brothers-type brass riff assigned to it. Hit this, and you get notes going out on channels 3,4 and 5. Hit it again and the brain sends reset messages to 3,4,5 AND 6! As you can see, the brain is resetting channels that aren't obviously used in the pad-song. Only channels 3,4,5 and 11 appear to be used but the brain also resets channels 6,12,13 and 14. This can affect user pad-songs. If you copy this preset kit into a user area and then set up your own pad-song, you'll see what I mean. The "channel 6" fix does work - 90% of the time. In certain circumstances though, it can lead to problems. ------------ Andrews trick for changing individual drum voices during Song playback or after Recording is brilliant, although I get the feeling it may be prone to the sort of problems I've mentioned above, especially if you're using pad-songs in your kits. Let's hope not.... Anyway, Andrew's hard work will soon be gracing the tips & tricks section of DTXpressions. ------------ To Chris. re. my Sysex files on the Web page. I checked these out with my setup and didn't get the CRC error, although I did manage to recreate it by manually editing the kit name in one of the files with a hex editor. I've got a feeling I might have done that very thing with some of the files - so I've recreated and uploaded them all again. I hope you have more success this time. If you don't - let me know. Also try pressing the "Value +" button if you get the CRC error message. That seems to be a bizarre way of "acknowledging" the error and continuing. The kit should then appear on your LCD. ------------ One last thing. Can anyone explain this? Go to the Voice menu and scroll to the CopyTo IN=pad 1 (or whatever) page. This is where you normally copy one pad to another. Now, scroll through the values for the destination pad. Go right to the end, past Pad 9, Pad 10 and "none". The very last entry on my unit is "hall 1". Hall 1!!?? What's going on here? - that's a reverb! How can I copy a pad setting to a reverb?! Well, of course, I can't. If I confirm that choice, it does nothing. Anyone got any ideas? --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger.
