Stick choice

2000-01-07 by Rolf Baehr

Rick,

I took a slightly different approach with sticks, following a suggestion
from the owner of the local drum store that I bought my set from. For me
anyway, the pads have less rebound than a standard drum head, and seemed to
be harder on my hands than an acoustic set (especially at first). So I've
been using sticks that have a rubber coating on the handle, and have also
been using gloves. I found that combination very comfortable for me. Most
of the drumming gloves that I've seen are leather, and you can really get to
sweat in those things. So what I've been using are gloves that are made for
shooting guns. They have a nylon mesh type material on the back so they
breathe real well. If you do try the gloves, make sure you buy them tight,
so that they stretch real snug. They have a velcro wrist fastener so they
go on and off easily. Let me know if you need further info on where to get
the gloves.. I can furnish that for you.

I always used 7A's on an acoustic set. The rubber coated ones I've been
using are a 5A, and I'm real happy with them. And the combo of these sticks
and the gloves result in less dropped sticks, at least for me.

Hope that helps!

Rolf
