I said I'd get back to you about my midi settings - 

I have my DTXpress set with the UT SEQ SETUP, SYNC MODE = ext.
I found otherwise that Cubase VST was not responding to the midi input correctly.
Once the snare and kick notes had been set correctly, Cubase VST now accepts input without any problems.
(a factory reset did not set snare and kick notes to what Cubase expected)

I think it has already been mentioned but the preset master volume is set to 100 by default.
If you want the output louder, set UT TG MASTER, VOLUME = 127.
