Graham.
Bleedin 'ell, you've been around!
My only claim to fame was that (when I lived in
Bradford) Ian Astbury asked me to join Southern Death
Cult - but I turned them down cause they were crap. As
it happens, I would have done a much better job in the
Cult :-}

Steve Hillage! Did you play with Mike Howlett? I met
him once at the "Battle of the Bands" a while back.
Had a chat with him before our slot. We came second.
"Fish Rising" was my life when I was 14.
And Mick Karn!! I am so jealous. Apart from Jaco, this
guy has to be the most innovative and talented player
to emerge on the scene since.....well, no-one.

Onto your questions:
Battery life - I think maybe about 2 or 3 years
depending on how much you use the kit and how long it
was in storage before it was shipped to you.

Back up - The MDF is an option, but if you've got a
PC, you don't need it. You can back everything up via
SysEx to a file on your PC.
