Hi Jason, The sounds haven't changed much in the II version. But there are a few changes in the hardware that I find very significant. First and most important the kicktower. The new one has a larger beater surface, ergo you will be able to play with a twinpedal. Also the feel of the new one is much better than the old one. The kicktower of the first is generaly regarded as the weakest part of the kit; not very durable and a very bad feel. Second the II version has a 3 zone snarepad (Opposed to a 1 or 2 zone, depending on the issue. The latter one's have a 2 zone pad) on the old one). This means the snare can produce 3 different sound depending on where you hit the pad (standard snare sound, rimshots and crossticks). This also goes for one of the cymbals (In my case the crash) It has 2 zones (= 2 sounds) and it is chokable. Third, the new rack is more stable than the old one, although the 2nd issue dtxpress I also comes with this one. These are the most important differences between the v.I and v.II. Then there's also some minor differences like better microphone output volume, improved interface. Most parts have been improved a little. In my oppinion the DTXpress II is a big improvement to the old one. A month ago I was in your position and I decided to buy a new DTXpress II in stead of a much cheaper DTXpress I. If money is not too big of an object, I would go for the new one. I hope you'll find this info helpfull.
