Re: HiHat Volume

2003-03-17 by liberatusvirus

Hi David,

It's unlikely that the electronic hh will ever have make exactly the
same impression on you as your acoustic hh, but we can check a few
things. In the trigger menu, is pad type for the hh correct? You can
also try one of the misc settings. Is your gain setting too low? If
so, your hits may not be registering as loudly as they could. A
brighter frequency cutoff in the Voice menu might help a little,
too, if the trigger sounds dull. You could also go into the utility
menu and set the UT System VolMode for live (rather than practice),
allowing you to adjust relative volume levels of the pads using the
the ACCOMP and CLICK knobs on the front of the module. Check the
manual. I'm assuming from your post that you aren't having a problem
with dropouts, which has been identified in this forum as the
consequence of poor default rejection settings involving the snare
and hh inputs.

Finally, how are you listening? Frequency response can be affected
by different source components. Some headphones and amps don't
reproduce the higher frequencies very well, making it seem as though
their levels are reduced relative to the mids or the lows.

That said, the hh trigger (but not controller) situation with the
DTXpress, or any other Yamaha DTX product in my opinion, is far from
optimal. You may well find, after exhausting all your options with
the pad and module as delivered, that another company's trigger
might be attractive--even if you manage to get the level where you
like it better.
