I was right where you are about two months ago.  Slowly I am moving 
forward :)  I grabbed a dvd called "getting started on drums" with 
Tommy Igoe.  It had me playing some basic beats and fills within 
hours.  I am actually still working primarily on those beats and 
improvising a bit when the mood strikes me :)  Keep in mind that I 
am EXTREMELY new to drumming and others in the group may negate my 
advice regarding this dvd.  I did find it helpfull though.  I think 
it cost me about 25 bucks at amazon.
