Smart one, James!  In my band, all instruments feed directly to the 
PA.  Any indiscrimate fiddling with the drum volume is bound to upset 
the other musicians, and when you're sitting behind the kit at the 
back of the stage it's impossible to know what your level is out 
front.  So I really do need to judge my settings acccurately.  I'll 
try your White-Out suggestion, however!
