Hi Stephen, Walt's been away on a prolonged business trip, from which he probably returned yesterday, but this being a weekend, and holiday, I would be surprised if he had his sea legs back yet. I've been able to get to a computer here and there, but I've been suffering a prolonged absence from the drum world because of a bout of arthritis/tendonitis in my right elbow and hand. Arthritis runs in the family a bit, but this is the first time that I've experienced it, at least to this extent, there. It was undoubtedly exacerbated by the amount of drumming that I had been doing of late. Sullen and grumpy would be an accurate description of my reaction. I don't know how it will all turn out yet. I had a few discussions with Pete Corona--an excellent drummer with an extraordinary pedigree--who told me that a few years ago, his arthritis was so bad that he couldn't lift a glass. I recently heard a recording of his, and I'd never have known it, though he had to learn to lead with his off hand. As for the Stones thing, even if I felt up to it, I think Charlie Watts has the position sewn up. Funny thing about Watts: Back in the olden days, I never had him pegged as a technically proficient drummer, by any means. His style didn't bother me, but it didn't impress me either. I always enjoyed Ringo better, despite what appeared to be his limitations. He played with such flawless solidity and command. But lately I've been hearing about Watts'jazz technique. He's getting a lot of respectful press now. But I still can't hear it--or see it (I caught part of the Stones concert on HBO a month or so back). I know that his jazz interests far outweigh his rock interests, but is he just so controlled that his finesse isn't on display with the Stones? Has anyone heard his big band albums, or the tribute album that he made with Jim Keltner?
