Response from Yamaha on HH65/HH80 and the DTXpress1/2 Question

2003-09-24 by oldguydrummer

TO all interested in this contiuning discussion:

I basically asked what is the limiting factor between the Module and
the hi-hat pedal? Clearly if the module can only produce 5 sounds for
the hi-hat, then having a variable hi-hat pedal is of no benefit.
From taking one apart it is clear that there are only five sound
steps available with the HH65 foot pedal. Based on the four contact
points on the bottom of the rubber pad that makes contact with the
FSR ribbon located on the base plate, these are:
1. Full open = no contact with sensor
2. Three steps of open-to-close range
3. Full closed position

Below iare the responses to specific questions that I received from
Yamaha Japan Customer Support:

OGD: Is the HH80 hi-hat fully variable or is it a stepped one (say 10
steps instead of say four) like the HH65?

YJCS: YES, HH80 and HH80A are fully variable so total resolution
depends on the module.

OGD: Are the DTxpress1/2 modules compatible with the HH80?

YJCS: YES, you can use HH80/A for DTXPRESS1/2.

OGD: Is the Dtxpress1/2 capable of receiving variable input from a
HH80 and producing more than the 5 sound steps? If the Dtxpress1/2
modules are capable of receiving variable input, how many steps of
input can it distinguish (32, 64, 127?)

YJCS: In this case you can get maximum 127 steps resolution for
control of hi-hat open sound.
About hi-hat control, there are so many factors to affect it. So it
is difficult to explain simply. The points are:

A. For the MIDI output of hi-hat control, the Time-Density has been
thinned out, so you can't measure the dynamic resolution via MIDI
data.

B. For the input control data, the internal resolution is 127 steps,
but there are some calculations to affect sound character (X-fade,
Decay control). So the final resolution of sound character depends on
each preset drum voice.

C. In the HH65, There is smoothing capacitor between signal & ground,
so substantially dynamic resolution is variable.
