In kick heaven with my KD-7

2000-11-17 by garyduke@idirect.com

Hey. I thought I'd just have to live with the brick wall feel and
tin can sound of the yamaha DTXpress kick trigger.

Until I tried the Roland KD-7 kick trigger at a music store (long
and macquade) here in toronto. Wow... what a difference.

I am trading in my yamaha kick for the kd-7, which works out to
30 bucks extra.

Even though the KD-7 is a reverse-beater 'kick yourself in the
foot style', it feels just like a normal setup. I guess the
upright stand is a more of a mental comfort than a feel enhancement.
The KD-7 is more solid (it doesn't move at all on my med pile carpet,
probably assisted by the fact the trigger is being hit toward you not
away :) and the velcro stuff on the bottom is also a helpful
anchoring mechanism.

The KD-7 is so much quieter, and more importantly, the thick but
hollow rubber trigger head lets me
'dig in to the head' so to speak and feels better than some acoustic
base drums! I can now play much quicker and comfortably.

Now that I have solved my kick woes with the KD-7 (I couldn't play
notes in rapid succession due to the brick wall play of the yamaha
kick trigger) I can't see how yamaha could put out such a subpar
trigger!

Try the KD-7. Are you listening YAHAMA ?? Compare the KD-7 to your
subpar kick trigger!!

P.s. anyone else pump the gain on the ride cymbal trigger to 99? it
really helps. Its better than adjusting the voice vol settings as the
gain change makes all the preset kits' rides louder. Also upped the
min volume of the ride trig as well. I also set self rej. to 0 for
snare and toms.

Cheers,

Gary
