Problems with kick drum volume when recording (a little long)

2000-11-18 by toyrobot@juno.com

I hope this isn't off topic, there doesn't seem to be an equivalent
group for the DS-12. I bought this set so I would have a kit to record
with at home. Just plug it in to the mixer and go. Trouble is, the
kick drum sound on every single kicj is insanely loud. Just turning
the kick sound down doesn't really help, because the peak is so high
it needs to be turned down too much and the kit sounds awful. There's
just this incredible peak at the very start of the waveform. The first
time I used it, I blew the fuses in my main power amp, and this was
NOT at a high volume. I've also tried to send the kick to an aux
output to deal with it seperately on the mixer, but the process needed
to do this is ridiculously complcated, and frankly doesn't seem to
work very well (Why they couldn't have made this easier, and GLOBAL,
so that it would change all the outputs for all the kits at the same
time I don't know).
On the other hand, maybe I'm just an idiot, if anyone can tell me what
I'm doing wrong, I would appreciate it.
