We are currently in the middle of creating a supplementary manual for the DTXpressII that will cover some of the trouble spots and points of information that Yamaha didn't, or couldn't, include. For the time being, however, the archives of the group will have to function as a giant amorphous FAQ. Here are a few points to get you started: 1. Leave yourself plenty of space for setup, even if eventually you'll be pushing the whole kit n' kaboodle against a wall, corner, or window. Leave yourself plenty of time, too. You're about to have one of the best experiences of your life. Loved ones may not see you for a while. 2. Do look at the manual at this point, at least the Setup, Voice, and Trigger sections, to get familiar with the terminology, the physical layout, and the basic procedures for entering settings. 3. Make sure to run a stereo cable between the hi hat pedal/ controller and the appropriate input on the back of the module. 4. Scroll through the Utility Mode (see manual) to the UT System Factory Set page and press Save/Enter twice for a Factory re-set. The module ships with a bug that prevents proper MIDI function; this procedure cures it. If you don't do it now, you'll lose all of your saved parameters later when the problem sneaks up on you. 5. Another problem out of the box is that either the hi hat or the snare won't work when you play them at the same time. The source of the problem is a setting called "specific rejection." I won't go into detail here, but look it up in the index, check the snare's specific rejection of the hi hat and the hi hat's specific rejection of the snare. If either/both of these numbers is/are above 7, lower it/them to 3 for now. You can make finer adjustments as you get more acquainted. 6. Check out the factory kits to get an idea of what you have. 7. Take two aspirin and call us in the morning. Ed
