Setting up a three-zone hihat.

2003-12-03 by oldguydrummer

How I setup a three hi-hat pad on my dtxpressII kit.

Clearly there are alot of ways to accomplish this using different
modules, pads, etc. but I figured I would describe what I did.

Components I used:

DtxpressII module	(2)
PCY65S (1)
PCY10 (1)
HH65 (1)

1/4" stereo splitter	(3)
(Radio shack 274-894)

1/4" stereo cables	(varies)

MOUNTING:

Combine the PCY65S and the PCY10 on a CYAT80 cymbal holder.

Since the rejection will be set as high as possible, you can reduce
the thickness of the factory supplied felt washer between the two
cymbal pads.

INTERCONNECT DIAGRAMS:

                      >----->HH65

                      >----->PCY10

MODULE SETUP:

Module 1:

Setup trigger input for zone 1 to PCY65 type pad, and set "Spec Rej=9
to 8".
Set voice for zone 1 to "no-assign" and volume to "0".

Setup trigger input for zone 8 to PCY10 type pad, and set "Spec Rej=9
to 1".
Set voice for zone 8 to your favorite lite hihat sound for the cup
surface.

Module 2:

Setup trigger input for zone 1 to PCY10 type pad, and set "Spec Rej=9
to 8".
Set voice for zone 1 to "no-assign" and volume to "0".

Setup trigger input for zone 8 to PCY65 type pad, and set "Spec Rej=9
to 1".
Set voices for bow and edge on zone 8 to your favorite hihat sounds.

Set the footstomp and footsplash to the same voices, volume, delay,
etc. on both modules.
You could also provide layering of two sounds by assigning one sound
for a footsplash on one module and another sound for a footsplash on
the second module.

THE CONCEPT BEHIND THIS:

The HH65 signal is split and will control the pads connected to zone
8 on both modules.

The signal from the PCY65S is sent to two modules, one to send for
triggering the actual sound to be generated and the other for the
sole purpose of being able to control the crosstriggering that occurs
when two pads are mounted close together.

That is the same for the PCY10, actual sound and crosstriggering
control.

THE END RESULT:

Both pads are fully controlled by one HH65 from open to closed
position.

I did "lose" two zones in the process, but by combining other
components, I did't lose any pads.
