Re: [DTXpress] XG

Hi Vivien...just getting my head around the many mysteries of midi myself. Here's an attempt at answering your question
As I understand it: GM or General Midi is the agreed standard for all manufacturers and has a limit of 128 voices available. Both Roland and Yamaha (probably others too ) have added additional voicing capabilities and enhanced the GM standard with their own. I think XG is Rolands' but can't say definitively. Anyway, while these additional midi voices are very cool and useful, they don't often translate from brand to brand, nor remain consistent from one year to the next, unlike GM: consistent, and somewhat limited...

amen.

What is XG standard? What is the difference between XG and GM?
