Excellent - that solved the problem.  I did have the Yamaha XG WDM
SoftSynth installed as an output - so it must have been looking for an
input.
 
BTW - in waiting around for downloads and suchlike - I noticed the
format of the SYSEX files you have seems to be a tiny bit different from
the information I found on the group site (on first glance the name of a
kit is 12 [not 8] bytes long).  Are there any other changes that you
know of?
