Is it possible to expand the DTXpress with other pads from other 
manufacturers? Some kits have nice snares, so it would be nice to 
replace the pad with a real-looking snare.

Yes... see Pintech or go to electronicdrums.com to learn about triggering your acoustic snare, with mesh head if you like!
