Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

My first post----Just bought a used DTX for my son who's 8 and having 
lessons and doing ace! The kit is mint and everything is ok but the 
hihat controller won't work, its not the lead because i've swapped 
them over but i'm not sure what else to try, so i'm asking you guys 
and would be really grateful for any help you can give us, what do i
