Playback (plz read, I really need help!!!)

Playback (plz read, I really need help!!!)

2001-08-04 by perrier1@sympatico.ca

Hey, ok well I'm new here...

so uh I figured out how to record every pad on a different track in
cakewalk using midi, so I can mix that... so yea I got the drumming
recorded in cakewalk. but its sounds like piano on the pc speakers...
ok so I thought I got to get them back into the brain so it sounds
like drum again (in the earphones connected to the brain)... ok well
I cant seem to get anything back into the brain... and I read even if
I do it may sound like piano again... so can someone please, give me
step by step instruction on how to playback from cakwalk to the brain
so it sounds like drums when I listen in the earphones...

Thanks for your time...

Any help will be greatly appreciated, cuz I really need to figure out
how to do that...

also I've read a lot of the post in here, but most people already got
it to sound like a piano in the brain at least...

hmmm just read some other guy post talking about problem getting data
out of the computer into the brain....

I'm using a sound blaster live (he also was), and I can save drumsets
(brain to comp) perfectly, but I cant get load any (comp to brain not
seem to work) on the dtxchange it says it worked, but on the brain
nothing changed... (that other guy had the same prob too)

just thought I'll add more details...

The piano sound is general midid channel 1, you probably need to make sure
the channel is set to 10(drums), I don't know if you can change this in
Cakewalk, but you can change it in the brain, you have to change it in two
places, but I'm realy out of practice and can't remember exactly where, the
voice and the utilities or song maybe? sorry.

Hope that's of some use, FYI I've never been able to get the pre-set tracks
to play in anything but piano without tinkering with the midi channel
settings, and even then they reset after you turn it off. This seems to be
a bug or design flaw in the brain software that defaults everything to midi
1 if it has no other information, of course for a drum brain it should
default to midi 10 and the pre-set songs should all have midi channels set
out of the box.
This isn't helping you anymore is it?

Keep trying, but I don't see why you should have to get the sounds back into
the brain to make them sound like drums, the data is in cakewalk now, so
long as cakewalk has access to the drum samples you used in the brain, you
should be able to get them back just in cakewalk.

Sanctum.

I understood you recorded every pad on a different track to mix your kit,
but you may just record all you want on the channel 10, and then mix it in
the voice menu of your drum kit, an easier way, isn't it? But maybe I
misunderstood what you wanted to do. So you want to record drums through all
midi channels or just only through channel 10? When you say you recorded
every pad on a different track, does it mean you record each pad on a
different midi channel? Give me more details.

I just tried dumpster... it doesnt seem to work...

what I mean is I can get the info from the drumset to the comp, and
record it on cakewalk or whatever... but now I would like to have it
recorded with the sounds of the drumset and not the default midi
sounds...

so I thought that I would have to get what I recorded in cakewalk
back to the brain, so it gets the sound of the dtxpress, and then
record it normaly to cakewalk using a normal cable (not a midi one)

reason I dont record directly like that and I want to use midi first
is that I want to be able to play with the volume of each pad as much
as I want without having to re-play it another time...

So anyway I cant seem to be able to get info from the computer to the
brain...

Anyone know why?

Anyone know another way of doing what I want to do?

Set up Cakewalk to record the midi information on a track. Play with
the kit you want to use.

When you've finished recording, play the midi track back, through the
Midi out on your soundcard to the brain. Make sure it is set for
channel 10. This should play the section you just recorded. Now edit
it to your satisfaction in Cake.

Now you have to covert the midi to audio. Just have Cake play the
piece via midi and set it up to record the audio that the Dtxpress
puts out, onto an audio track. (First turn Local control to "off" on
the DTXp).
If you want to change the kit on the DTXp, go ahead; If you want to
record, say, the snare on its own track, split it off onto a seperate
track (still on channel 10 though) and mute the rest of the kit on the
other track (you'll have to ask a Cake user about how to do that - I'm
on Logic). Just keep recording new audio tracks until you have all
your midi tracks as audio. Then mute the midi track(s) and you're
away.
There will be some delay between the midi track and the audio one
(which depends on your system's latency), but it should be constant
between audio tracks recorded from the same midi source. You may need
to line them up though with other audio - recorded directly, for
example.
cheers

I don't know how you go about setting up Cake to transmit to the midi
out port (it should be straightforward). If its not working, try
sending midi data to another synth/module etc to see if its a Cake
setup problem, and change the midi cable - it just might be dodgy (or
in the wrong socket :-) The DTXp brain should just recieve the midi
data without you doing anything, if its plugged in correctly.
