I cannot see how you can blow it up if it is built correctly. It has
now power supply, sothe only power can come from the piezo device
itself. While piezos can generate a high votgae, they do not generate
much energy, and the resistor in series with the transistor base and
the diode across the base will protect the transistor from at least 1000V!
Due to the problems people seem to have building the circuit, I have
made a PCB and will build them up and put them in a box for 25GBP (2
zone - I haven't made a 3 zone PCB) - see pictures section for a photo
of it.
Also, I lent one to my drum teacher who uses the Roland TD8 and it
worked fine.
