Spinning sticks

2006-03-14 by john@johnallsopp.co.uk

Hi ppl

Does anyone know how to spin their sticks?

I've looked online but all roads point to a book and I don't want to
perform circus WOW tricks I just want to know how the basic spin is
done. I can do 360 degrees but then stop.

Look in one of the recent issues of either "Modern drummer", or "Drums", one or the other had a article on twirling. You can also pickup (buy or rent ) the John Blackwell DVD. He has a section in there.

No, but I can make them fly across the room and nearly take my eye out!

Keith.

I can do that too. I have a glass lampshade in my room and I'm amazed
it's still in one piece.

Where do people store their emergency spare sticks in case of
live-play droppage? I've removed the black plastic ends to the two
aluminium poles that 'embrace' you (and hold the snare on the left and
the 'floor' tom on the right) and I put a spare stick inside each,
protruding about 5 inches. If I drop a stick I can pick another
without losing the beat. I stop them rattling and moving with a glob
of Blu Tak.

Any advance on that idea, besides being skilled enough not to drop the
sticks in the first place?

J,

What you need is a drum stick holder:

Here are a few spin tutorials. Sorry, I can't credit the drummer as I
only recorded the links, not the source. Thanks whoever you are!

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
