Inputs 1-8 on the DTXpress are Bass, Snare, Tom1, Tom2, Tom3, Crash,
Ride, and Hi-Hat, and they are all in use when you purchase the kit
(right now the Crash and Snare come as dual zone pads, the rest are
single)
Each of these is a Stereo Input, meaning a dual-zone pad (one with a
Piezo for the main head and a FSR (Force Sensing Resistor) for the rim
will be able to produce two distinct sounds. When you buy it, most pads
are single zone and only produce one sound, so you can add an extra
sounds to the rims of the Snare, Tom1, Tom2, Tom3, Crash, Ride, and
Hi-Hat rim if you wanted. Technically, you could add it to the bass
input but the tower included has no way of doing this.
In addition, there is an input 9/10, which accepts two Piezo inputs.
That means two additional sounds, wether it is a BP80, a pair of single
zone pads, etc. It will not accept a TP80s or other Piezo/FSR pad
because it dual require dual Piezo.
There is a input 11/12, but it is for Hi-Hat controller pedal.
So, that's nine (7 if you are buying a new kit) more sounds easily
achievable. If that isn't enough I don't see a reason why you couldn't
buy a second DTXpress module (a bargain, really), connect them via MIDI
but only send program changes, and add 10 more inputs to your system.
Or a SPD-20, a Roland brain of any sort, etc. Expansion is limitless,
but most prefer to keep their electronic kits small and portable -- the
question is how many sounds do you need in one song -- keep in mind, you
can set up a pad to do program changes during a song too...so with
creativity, you really aren't limited by the number of pads on the kit.
