hooking DTXpress to the computer

hooking DTXpress to the computer

2001-11-14 by edjspi@yahoo.com

hi...

if someone could please help to clear this up I would appreciate it-

I know that the DTXpress doesn't have sample RAM, so I cannot load my
own samples into it. If I create sounds on the computer, is there NO
way to get those sounds into the DTXpress? When one does hook the
DTXpress to the computer, what do you do with it? Is it only to
trigger a computer through the DTXpress?
I guess I'm just not sure why the DTXpress has the ability to connect
to a computer if you can't load anything from the DTXpress to or from
the computer...

thanks, and sorry if this seems like a dumb question!

Hi,

There are a lot of questions recently about getting your own samples
into the dtxpress' brain. The answer is still no: there is no memory
availeble in the brain for your own samples.
But there are exelent alternatives!
For example, buy yourself a relatively cheep secondhand sampler.
I have bought an Akai S2000 for about 300 euro with 32mb. All these
s2000 have scsi and midi. Midi out from the brain to midi in of the
s2000. With scsi you can connect your PC, HD's CDrom, etc.
Now you have infinite possibilities and not only with your own
samples...
There are at this moment outstanding sample cdroms with a sound
quality you can only dream of (and further more this HQ samples are
processable with sound-editors like SoundForge, etc.)
One of the best sample cdroms i can recommended is the Wizoo Platinum
24 acoustic drums:

"Platinum 24 - Acoustic Drums is from the German company Wizoo, who
are also known for their music books, mainly Software and Synth
Guides, but have now developed a rapidly expanding range of sample
CD's. Platinum 24 is hot off of the press having only just been
released.

The advertising for this CD states "To date, exclusively Steinberg
LM4 owners enjoyed access to the striking sounds archived in Wizoo's
legendary 24-bit Drum Library. Now these great sounds are accessible
on all samplers that support the Akai-S1000 format. The Acoustic
Drums CD features 32 drum kits, including chromatic kits, percussion
and reverb kits (Lexicon 480L). Using a very special 16-way
microphone setup, all instruments were recorded digitally in 24-bit
format. The outcome is stunning - to date unrivalled spatial depth
and transparency. With up to 20 dynamic levels per instrument, these
sounds enable detailed drum programming - even the subtlest tweaking
is now possible."

"The sonic quality is excellent, the samples are big, there is no
looping and there are full tails to the sounds. I couldn't detect
even the slightest glitch as the sounds decayed to silence. Aside
from the Dry Kit, which sounds deliberately flat the kits sound
totally realistic, I really don't think you could get a better sound.
Turn the volume up and there could be a drummer in the room with you.

I don't think there is anything else the producers could have done to
improve the sounds, they really would appear to be at the limit of
today's technology. I'd normally insert here a line about the sample
CD could only be improved upon by hiring a live musician, but here
I'm not so sure. Unless that is you have access to a top notch studio
and set up and even then I doubt if you would be able to produce
significantly better."

"I wouldn't suggest this CD to a beginner in the sampling world, but
for anyone who is looking for a library of high quality acoustic
drums sounds then this CD is recommended without hesitation. I
imagine the people at Wizoo came up with idea of producing the
highest possible quality acoustic drums sounds CD, may not be a very
original or exciting project, but I'd like to see anyone do a better
job than this.

Overall - Value for money 9/10 - Usability 10/10 - Documentation
8/10 - Sonic Quality 10/10. Indeed a platinum collection of drum
sounds - 10/10"

This way your dtxpress goes beyond all possibilities.
What more can I say?

Hi Eddie,

I don't know if this helps but one of the things you can do with the
computer is to upload and download kits into PC files, which allows
you not only to backup your setups, but also lets you exchange them
with other DTXpress users. Giles has a VB6 application available at
http://www.thehearns.fsnet.co.uk/dtxpressions/ called DTXchange to
manage this. He also has some kits available. Walt

I am interested in using a sampler like the S2000 for better sounds.

Is it possible to still get good hihat control using a sampler.

can you map the Hi Hat pedal to the decay in the sampler?

Any help would be great.

Regards

Wal

somebody help me out here...
I believe the dtxpress sends the hi hat pedal as
continuous controller data ( wheel ) , and the hit as standard note on data
so you'd have to edit the sampler patch to map the controller
to decay. Now, as to which CC to monitor?? use Giles software to
monitor the midi stream.
