Multi-velocity kits

I was wondering if anyone else has messed with creating multi- velocity user kits on the DTXpress. Unfortunately you can only layer 2 samples, but it still makes the kit sound a lot better if you cross fade the same samples, but with settings akin to a real kit. I messed with this last night and it makes the DTXpress sound a lot better. I took the snare and used identical snares for V1 and V2. For V1 I lowered the pitch a little, and set the filter cutoff a bit to muffle the sound. I also shortened the decay of V1 and then set the crossfade between the two samples. So when you hit the snare softly, V1 is triggered and when you hit harder, V2 is triggered. It's not quite as realistic as having samples taken at different velocities, but it definitely spices up the kit quite nicely. I know lots of you have probably done this before so it's all old hat, but it really improved the sound of my kit a LOT so I thought I'd mention it. Anyway, I did the same to the toms and will continue with the other pads tonight. The toms sound brilliant with the crossfaded samples, so now when I hit them softly, the decay is shorter ... which is as it should be. Okay, so it's not a Roland V-Drum sound, but it's definitely a lot better than the default kits. IMHO there are far too few acoustic kits in the collection, and even these show little editing work behind them to make them sound more acoustic. Who plays a TR909 using sticks anyway!? :) When I get the time I plan to do a slew of these "multi-velocity" kits, and I'll probably dump the settings to midi and make them available. Anyone else done some cool kits? Ian
