Gigging

Gigging

2000-01-22 by vcrmac@earthlink.net

Hi all,
Andy, Giles, thanks much for the report on the gig. Despite the
frustrations, it sounds like it really did go well. After seeing
Talking Heads years ago, my criteria for what makes a good show
changed a bit. From then on, I always asked myself "was it fun?".
If people had fun at your gig (by however one defines "fun"), you
guys did fine. You're also right to want perfection from
yourselves and your crew, though. You may never get there but...

I'm thinking with 44 people now on the list, someone else must have
played out with the DTXpress. It would be great to hear some more
war stories.

It's interesting that it was so tough to mix the e-kit
in. E-drums are always advertised as "a sound man's dream" due to
no miking, individual pad volume control, etc. "Just plug 'em in and
go." It makes perfect sense that it would be this way if you just
played one of your kits in the gig. Who's going to do that, though?
You'd have to sound check each kit, which would be a massive pain.
Would the compressor serve to even out the output volume from the
module? If so, this sounds like a necessary purchase if you're going
to go up in front of people. Keep us posted on how this works, guys.

Giles, maybe as more gig stories come in (or even just from you and
Andy), I can see a "playing live" tips section in DTXpressions being
a life-saver. Pre-leveling kit and pad volumes, compression, etc.

Graham, great stories! If the list slows down again, keep 'em coming.
Having not played out very much, I'm living the stage life vicariously
through you guys. Maybe I'll get off my ass (well, I play sitting down
but you know what I mean) and make some noise...

Nice job, later,
Rick

Hi guys.
Just thought I'd say thanks for the positive comments
about the web site. On the basis of what was said over
the last few emails, I'm going to include a section on
"live" playing of the DTXpress. Compression is
definitely the answer if you need to even out the
peaks. Perhaps we could have a chat on some of the
best models to buy...
I'm also currently working on a section that looks at
the audio output from the brain and compares the
headphone/rear L&R outputs, relative volume of each
pad , frequency spectrum etc. so I'll probably tie it
all in with the live section.

Chris - looking forward to the kits. If you want to
hear any of the band's stuff, just go to the web site
and follow the link to Fluid Power Society (or just
delete the "\DTXpressions" bit of the URL). There are
some MP3's in there somewhere...
Andy - let me know how rehearsal goes. I'll get a tape
together soon with some of our stuff on it and send it
to you.
Graham - I think Stewart Copeland is now heavily
involved in film-scoring. I'll never forget that
hi-hat part on "Walking on the Moon". Genius.
XoIoxoloX - Thanks for the compliments. I admit I was
a bit rushed and even a bit nervous, so the MP3s are
not as good as I hoped.

Morning all, hope you all had good weekends around the world?

Just thought I mention that our ranks could increase a little as, following a
post to a music site I get mail from, to get DTXPress info, a few people have
come to me to ask about the responses I got?

Of course I am now able to plug away with the "Go get one" and giving them
the links to here, Giles' great site and the Yamaha samples page.

More later no doubt!

Cheers

Graham
