I need small powered speakers for dtxpress

I need small powered speakers for dtxpress

2002-11-20 by adrianmaxwell

I'm on a very tight budget but desperate for portable monitors.
Does anyone have advice on sub-£50 speakers which give a decent
output & sound when used with the dtxpress?
What about used ones?
Are there any designed to fit on the frame?
cheers

Hi Adrian,

You might do well to run a search on "monitors" or "speakers" to get
the benefit of the group's collective wisdom. The problem is that
ultra-low-power computer-style monitors are what you usually find at
that price. You may get some sound from them, but it won't be at all
loud or full range, even if you get an anemic little subwoofer with
them. And turning it up wouldn't be a good idea for either the
speakers or your ears. I know that Vergence makes a powered pair of
mini monitors, which boast a fairly high 75 watts. The cost is
around $200. Roland has a bunch of options, but they tend to be
pricey. The PM-3 system, which is marketed specifically for
electronic drummers, runs about $550 used, way too much. There's
also the PM-1, a single two-way speaker, which is about $350 new.
Maybe there are some used ones on ebay. Many people use keyboard
amps for their drums because the of the wide frequency response.
Roland makes the KC-500 all the way down to the KC-100. Other
companies' versions, however, new or used, are worth checking out.
When all else fails, an inexpensive, reasonably powered, preferably
high-current home amp/receiver attached to a pair of speakers that
can handle the thump, with or without a sub, will allow you to hear
yourself, as long as you don't have to compete with any other
amplified instruments or turn up the volume very high. If you decide
to go that route, make sure that you start at a low volume and
increase gradually; the speakers may not approve. I'll bet some
clever duck in this group has found a way to mount small monitors on
the frame, but I don't know of any that are designed to mount on it.
