Iron Cobra double bassing w/ DTXII

Iron Cobra double bassing w/ DTXII

2002-12-27 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

Hey guys! Its me again and I just wanted to ask a question about
double bassing. When I last played drums, about six years ago, I
never learned how to double bass and when I purchase my DTXII next
month I will also be purchasing an Iron Cobra double bass pedal.
Are there any tips you drummers can offer about learning to play
double bass? Thanks!!

well, heres what i can tell you about learning to play double
bass: dont expect to be as good as Dave Lombardo (legendary
drummer for Slayer) for quite some time. if your double bass
experience is anything like mine, your left foot is gonna be weak
and inaccurate when you get started. dont get discouraged
though. the learning curve is mild at first, but all of a sudden your
skills burst into effect. my only real advice (aside from practicing
like crazy) would be to spend some time playing some normal
beats with only your left foot on the double bass pedal. this
should build up your speed and power on your left leg.

anyway, i dont know how well a double bass pedal works with
the dtxpress. i just ordered my dtxpressII this morning (yipee!). it
should work great. the bass drum pad has been expanded to
accomodate a double bass pedal. anyway, i will definitaly be
using a double pedal with my dtx kit... so i will let you know in
about a week.

1st, I have owned the Iron Cobra and it is a very good
pedal. However, I recommend Pearl's top of the line
pedal, I've got one, just can't think of the name. It
has alot more "touch" than the cobra.

2nd, There are some good books out there. Im at the
office so mine aren't handy. I would advise working
through alternating 1/4's,1/8's and 1/16's on the
pedals while playing a basic straight 4/4 rock beat
(1/8's on HH and snare on 2 and 4). Also utilize
paradidles RLRR and LRLL on the BD. These are good
starting points.

Good Luck

Double peddles work fine with the ETXpress II. I am likewise
learning to do double bass after many years of not playing drums.
There are lots of exercises on the net (see www.drumbum.com), and
some suggest doing the rudiments with your feet vs your hands as a
strategy. Keep practicing, as it is just starting to come together
for me after several months of constant effort.
