As far as I know, the stereo Yam. pads only have a polarity switch
and sensitivity knob on the back, right? Everything else is set
elsewhere. Forget the polarity switch; it has no effect on what you
hear through the brain. The sensitivity knob is an extra gain
setting. Leave it in the middle, unless someday for some strange
reason, you just can't live without turning it up or down a little.
If it's too high, I guarantee you'll start hearing pops that you
know didn't come from you. Min.vel. determines how softly you can
hit and still hear something. Use it in conjunction with gain, which
determines the force with which your hits register, to set your
dynamic range. But remember, if you set min. vel. too low or gain
too high, you'll be asking for crosstalk from other pads, because
your pads are so sensitive or so hot that they start picking up
every vibration in the neighborhood. As my father and Aristotle used
to say, moderation is the key. Get a balance between gain and min.
vel. that you can live with. Then set the volume controls--for
individual pads under the voice menu, for the entire kit in utility,
and for kick/snare and toms/cymbals on the front of the module--to
your liking. Be prepared to fiddle a lot.
The DTX has a certain amount of redundancy, but attending to only
one of these parameters will not substitute for what the others do.
Unfortunately, there's no single intuitive way to put e-drums in
order. It takes a lot of trial and error--sometimes detracting from
ability just to play. But eventually you find basic settings that
you won't have to vary too much. And, yes, they'll have a lot to do
with your playing style. You can't please all of the people all of
the time with the same numbers.
