(Editing Software) DTX* and Emagic SoundDiver

2000-04-03 by tom@ytram.com

Hi!

Has anyone used Emagic's SoundDiver to edit the kits, etc in their DTX*?
I've downloaded the demo and it appears like it would be useful. The problem
is that the demo has a 5 minute timebomb that shuts down MIDI output. (In
other words, after 5 minutes it won't send anything to external device.) By
the time I

o) get the program started,
o) select my device (DTX),
o) select the MIDI port,
o) and upload the kit I want to edit,

my 5 minutes is almost up. The other thing that is disabled in the demo is
saving so you really can't get a head start on the process the next time you
start the demo.

So far, I have uploaded a kit that I customized and looked at the uploaded
settings. Everything looks like it should.

SoundDiver calls the definition of an external device an "adaptation". It
looks like if you've got a device that speaks MIDI, they have an adaptation.
I found one for my Korg X5, and one for my Yamaha DTX.

The one for the DTX claims to require DTX V2, but it seems to working with
my DTX V1. (Interestingly, the picture of the DTX on their WWW page does not
appear to have the DTXV2 logo on it :-)

The adaptation defines the messages, the data and the user interface for
editing the data. I find the DTX one to be a little clunky but have not yet
tried to change it.

By the way, I don't think that the DTXV2 adaptation is part of the standard
set. There is a download page that contains all of their adaptations, you'll
find it there.
