High-Hat/Snare Positioning

High-Hat/Snare Positioning

2003-07-17 by draker2003

HI all,

I'm sure this question will have some of you yukking it up, but here
goes anyway:

On my old acoustic set, I could play 16th notes off my high-hat/snare
(I'm usally playing cross-handed, except for 16th stuff) by setting
up the snare approx 45-60 degree angle from the hi-hat, so in effect
when I'm playing the rapid 16th triplets it's easy to come off the hi-
hat and onto the snare.

However, on the DTX, replicating the ideal positioning for hi-hat and
snare to achieve 16th notes hasn't been easy for me. When I adjust
the hi-hat so I can hit it cleanly, I'm screwed up trying to find the
right position for the DTX's lower rack arm for the snare. Anybody
with pictures, diagrams, etc? I'm not sure if I explained the problem
with enough detail, but hopefully someone out there in DTX-land will
understand what I'm trying to do. Ideally, I want to be able to look
straight ahead to play around the kit, but for those songs where
there's a repetitive 16th note attack, be able to swivel a little and
face the hi-hat/snare straight on -- is that possible? Thank you in
advance for whatever insights. Also, if there's a link or a message
number where this question has already been answered, bring it on,
too. I attempted to go through the database already, but didn't find
anything. I know this was a bit "windy", but I'm done now. -- Draker.

Hey Draker, so I guess the point of your problem would be a problem
with the hi hat positioning?? Or is it more the snare? Maybe I can
offer some ideas. For example, instead of keeping the hi-hat pad on
the snare rack-arm, you could move the hi-hat pad up to the arm that
carries the xpress module. I don't know if this helps, but maybe it
could give your more positioning ideas.

I think this is essential, frankly. You're just too limited for
relative positioning otherwise. The big issue is the size of the
pads... on an acoustic kit, you might have 13" hats and a 14" snare,
which means you can get the snare close enough to the hats to run
16ths from the hats to somewhere on the snare, while still keeping
the snare sweet spot in a sensible place. With two 8" pads, that's
nigh-on impossible. This is one of the main reasons I "upgraded" the
snare to a 10" Pintech, and the hit-hat to a TP65S. It's still far
from perfect, but it ain't bad.

I invested in an extra clamp and long extension similar to the ones on the
Toms ... I place the HH at the top and the snare 1/2 way down or where ever
is comfortable at the time for the songs that I will be playing.
