Bass pedals, chain vs strap vs whatever...

2003-08-18 by SKWatson

Anyone want to put in their two cents on the
advantages/comparisons/differences in pedal construction, namely the
use of single or double chain, or straps. Looking at the Iron
Cobras, but haven't played in a great while. I think the ones that
I did play back then were attached by cow (or dinosaur) hide...

Thanks... Steve

Steve,

Here's definitely 2 cents worth, certainly no more. I go back to the
leather strap era, almost exclusively Camco's. I still remember how
those things felt; I liked to keep mine on a loose leash to swing
freely. Since then I've used single chains, and not particularly
elaborate ones. I've briefly played the Iron Cobra and the Axis.
Though I was mightily impressed with their construction and feel, I
never felt that they made my playing any better. To my mind, pedals
have a bit of the Catch-22 about them. You really have to use them
for a while to see whether you like them, but that's not always
possible. I often find, however, that the more I use any pedal, the
more I tend to find it satisfactory (unless it's really a piece of
junk); oldtimers seem to be like that. But build quality is an
important consideration, to be balanced with how much money you're
willing to spend for it, as well as the ability to tweak. A few
pedals have such minute adjustments that I can't imagine one of them
not working for everybody, heel up or heel down. But that's just me--
definitely not the fussy sort with pedals. Check out Drumzillaslair
for some articulate and detailed comments about this subject:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drumzillaslair/
These people have a lot of collective information about equipment.
Ask Zilla to let you join and check his archives under kick pedals in
general or specfic ones like Axis or Iron Cobra. Last week, I think,
they hit on the subject again.

I'll see your 2 cents, and raise you a penny.

When I last drummed, I *think* it was a nylon strap, single pedal -
but I was so young and ignorant I didn't care. I can't remember the
brand. What's more I had no say in it as it wasn't my kit. When I got
back into it, I knew I wanted a double pedal but ... the choice ...
and the *prices*! Top of the line gear would have set me back more
than half what my DTXpressII cost - which just wasn't an option.

I decided that even a budget pedal would be able to outstrip my
limited capabilities for quite some time, and that all I needed was
solid construction (proper base plate, decent footplate, well screwed
together) as ... how shall I put this ... I displace more water than
I used to. I went for a budget pedal - a new Stagg PP1200 from an
eBay merchant - and I'm more than happy with it. At such time that my
feet are so damn fast that the pedals aren't good enough, I might
upgrade. I anticipate I will be in a retirement home first.

I realise that not really caring about my kick pedals marks me as a
drumming lightweight, but I don't really care. I'm having too much
fun.

I have been using a "Ghost" pedal since the seventies. It still works great.
Hard strap, clock spring action. I also picked up an Iron Cobra D.B pedal
recently. Chain drive tension spring action. It seems to work ok but I am still
coming up to speed with the left foot....perry
