The volume through the headphone output has always been low. The best
cans to connect, unaided, to the DTXpress are high-quality, closed-
design (thereby blocking out extraneous noise), low-impedance (rated
at 100 or lower) studio monitors. Lots of companies make ones that
fit the bill--Beyerdynamic, Sony, AKG, and Sennheiser among them.
Good ones generally tend to run $100 or so (listing anywhere from $50
to $100 more). If you already have a set of phones that you like and
don't want to buy another just to use with your DTXpress, you might
consider using a headphone amp. It just so happens that I have a
Rolls HA43 listed in the Classifieds section of our sister site,
DTXpressions. If you're interested, give me a holler. (This reply to
your post is not a shameless attempt to sell it.) Some people use an
extraneous mixer, instead of the basic one on the front panel of the
module, to obtain better control of the balance between the outputs
of the kit and the CD/MP3 player that provides their practice music.
This method can get the same results as a dedicated headphone amp,
but it may be overkill for those who don't have a second module. Your
call.
As for the hh pedal, you might just as well open up the unit to see
what's going on with the spring. It's probably seen a lot of use. The
mechanics are not terribly complicated. OGD has provided a picture of
the HH65's innards in the Photo section ("insides"); the HH60 is
similar.
