Playing Midi Songs from a PC

Playing Midi Songs from a PC

2004-02-01 by ozteevan

Hi all

This may be old news to some of you but for me, my discovery this
evening, was a revelation.

Up until now I have been using a PC connected to my (DTXv2) drum
module to play mp3's & CD's using WinAmp. This works fine through the
audio feed from my sound card. I have also previously used WinAmp to
play midi files through the same audio feed to the module.

I do have my module hooked up using a midi cable to the joystick port
on my sound card which I use for saving and editing Sysex files.

Now the magic bit happen after I discovered that in WinAmp Options
under MIDI Playback I could select the midiOut to go to "MPU-401". By
selecting this option the midi songs have their sound generated by the
module synth rather than the PC synth.

Now I just set up my play list of midi files in WinAmp and play them
while killing off the original midi drum track. (Hitting the "Rhythm"
button on the DTXv2 - Shift-PageUp on DTXpress I think [check Rhythm
Mute Function in manual].)

I hope this tip helps someone else.
Roger
