Cymbal Failure

Cymbal Failure

2004-02-20 by Jay

I've had my DTXII for almost 2 months now, and with all the Nirvana
covers I play it has taken quite a beating. But last night my dual
zone cymbal failed. Everytime I hit it, it sounds like it's
immediately choked. EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I checked the connection on
the back, and it feels a little soft. It's almost as if it doesnt
*snap* into place any more. What's going on here? Do I need to replace
that pie piece already? Anyone got a cymbal they want to sell?

Jay,

Once in a while if you whack these things to kingdom come, you
apparently can upset the elements inside the cymbal. Take a look at
OGD's dissected PCY80S cymbal (even if yours is a 65S) in the photos
section to see what's inside. If you're lucky, something is loose
that you can re-solder. Sometimes you can't see solder damage too
easily. If you're handy with an iron you could re-solder everything
in sight. If all else within reason fails, you could go spend a buck
at Radio Shack for a new piezo and simply wire it to the jack like
the old one. I'm assuming that you're out of warranty and have
nothing to lose. I'm also assuming that you can take one of these
things apart and get it back together again.
