Difference Of DTXpress & DTX 2.0

Difference Of DTXpress & DTX 2.0

2001-01-24 by psx333@hotmail.com

Hi,

Is anyone able to explain the differences between the DTXpress and
DTX 2.0?
I would like to know as many differences as possible as i'm soon to
buy one of the kits and want to get the best out of the two.

Some would say the DTX 2.0 is but what about the DTX 2.0 not having
the PC-host facility ? Is it really important to have this? I'm not
even that sure what i'd use the PC-host facility for.

Also are there any other things that the DTXpress has that the DTX
2.0 does not have?

Any help from anyone would be apprechiated,

Cheers,
Neil

Neil,

I was hoping someone else would stick their neck out on this one...

Basically I think you should go for a DTXv2 kit (like a DS10) if you tear
down and set up a lot. The DS series was once Yamaha's professional choice
and has advantages therein. But it's hard to beat the value of the Xpress.

Now...to plagiarize earlier posts of mine...

I actually ordered an Xpress, but chose the DS10 because I thought the
DS10's dual trigger pads and slightly
beefier hardware were worth the dough (if you have it to spend, or find a
good boxing day sale like I did).

The DTX module has a nicer, bigger, top-down, display screen (though you
can't read it in the dark) and a rotating wheel (a la jog shuttle) for
zipping through the settings. This, I hear, is a huge improvement if you
tinker with settings a lot. The top-down display meant that I could mount my
module on a small crate next to me, rather than on the kit, which freed up
some hardware and isolated the brain from vibration.

The dual zone pads of the DS10 aren't that much bigger than single zoners,
and they do take getting used to. I found myself generating accidental rim
shots a-plenty if I stopped concentrating on proper form. Since adding a
BP80 to handle my side stick, wood block and cowbell I don't use the dual
trigger function on toms one and two. It's great for the snare.

Can't say enough about the rock-solid RS80 rack. It's more stable and
adaptable thanks to the adorable bypassing quick release alloy clamps (one
for each pad). These clamps also make tearing down and setting up much
faster.

Unlike the Xpress, the DS10 comes with cymbal booms and little keepers that
keep the cymbals from rotating, though the boom function is moot for me now.
As it turned out the perfect position for my cymbals has the stands
perfectly upright. I notice the Xtreme has gone this route) Oh yeah, you can
choke the cymbals, which is nice.

A DS10 comes with more pads than the Xpress, which allowed me to give up
using one PCY80s for a ride and use a
TP80s for that, which feels a lot more natural, plus this gave me two PCY80s
crashes, which they're good at.

I've also heard various complaints here about the Xpress kick tower (noisy
for example). Apart from being a little hard feeling, I like the kp80s.

As for how they compare for midi recording I'm the last guy to ask. Perhaps
someone else can help you there.
