recording to a computer...?

I just got a monopoly and I want to record to my ibm laptop 
(windows+80GB).  I don't have any software or a soundcard yet.  I have 
a decent mic and bass amp.  Any suggestions?  Should I go through the 
amp, mic, or directly from synth to computer?  I want to layer mic 
tracks on top of keyboard tracks.  Any particular recording software  
that is good+cheap+easy to use?  Thanks for the help!

If you buy an M-Audio card, you get a restricted version of Ableton Live bundled with it. Live is great and easy to use. I ve been so impressed, I shelled out

Tracktion, from Mackie, is powerful, easier to use than most audio
workstations, and not very expensive.  It's different, though, so you
should look up some reviews to get a feel for it.

Both of my DW-8000s are sick.  I am trying to make one good one.  Sigh.
