If anyone has it and can send it to me, I'll post it to the downloads on
dw8000.com.

Re: [DW8000] Patches Musitronics Expansion

I've added Jerome's 64 Musitronics patches in .WAV file to the
dw8000.com/downloads <http://dw8000.com/downloads.html> page.
They're listed as " 64 patches from Musitronics WAV file
<http://dw8000.com/downloads/DW-8000-patches.wav>". Please download
this and let me know if the link works. In the past I've accidentally
uploaded files with file permissions locked down so people can't access
them. That was mildly embarrassing. I've checked the permissions on
the updated files and they look good, so I don't expect there to be any
download problems.

I haven't personally had any trouble loading patches via WAV files, but
Jerome reported success with the tape level switch on his DW8000 set to
high, and the volume on his computer set close to the maximum level.
Try it out and report what works for you.

I still have an Angel City Turbo board that I intend to install in my
DW8000. Right now it's still lost in stuff from my last move, but when
I find it again I'll install it and see if I get the other banks. I did
recently locate my MEX-8000 expander unit, so there's hope I'll find the
Angel City board soon.

I just replaced the entire key contact assembly in my DW8000 a few
months ago. If I find the Angel City board I'll also replace the felt
as someone recently described.

With a DW-8000, an EX-8000, an MEX-8000, and an Angel City Turbo board,
I should have access to a lot of banks!

Dear Jerome and Mark,

thank you very much! After laying under my couch for 12 years I will bring the DW back into game; change the battery and give feedback how it works.

big hugs!

Ronald

Re: [DW8000] Patches Musitronics Expansion

2012-04-14 by Jerome St-Pierre

Hello Mark,

The patch bank doesn't contain anything related to the Musitronics turbo board (even if the board was installed when I backed it up). They are simply a sub collection of the banks from http://www.pallium.com/bryan/dw8000.php (all of them but the last bank from Yes).

When I made this backup, they were still like the original patches without any edition at all. I only sorted my favorite patches and I made this backup. Maybe the description should mention it is a sub collection from of other existing banks.

The only section I was not so crazy about was the basses (71 to 78). I did create much better basses with the DW and I was planning to improve them later. But for the rest, especially the strings, the brasses and the organs, they are totally blowing me away.

You should also mention the switch in the back of the DW as to be set to High to successfully import the patches.

Have a nice weekend!

I already sent my .wav tape backup to Mark so hopefully you'll soon be able to find them on dw8000.com.

Re: [DW8000] Patches Musitronics Expansion

2012-04-14 by Mark B

Ah, thanks for the clarification. If I understand correctly then, this
is the tape-out audio as a .WAV file of patches found in the Sysex patch
data files that Bryan Ressler has posted on his page. I've been in
contact with Bryan before. It strikes me as useful to having the patch
data available as .WAV file in addition to Sysex data, as loading
patches via .WAV file might be considered easier for people without much
MIDI gear. I'll update the label on the WAV file on dw8000.com. Bryan
has several of the same Sysex file that I have posted, namely the
Preload patches from the factory tape side B, and the MEX banks, but
then he has a couple other banks (including the Yes patches). I'll
communicate with Bryan and likely post those additional Sysex files on
dw8000.com as well, but you've brought up a good point to me: Perhaps I
should post each bank as both a Sysex file and a WAV file. I can create
WAV files from the patch banks on Bryan's page.

I'll add a general how-to note about loading WAV files to the site,
although it's covered in the DW8000 and EX8000 manuals, which are
already posted on the site, and whether you use the low or high position
switch setting depends somewhat on the output gain of the device you're
using to play the analog data file.

I've never loaded the Yes sounds or the Jack, Walt, or ProEdit patches
that Bryan has on his site. Now I'm itching to hear them, but I'm
trapped 2500 miles away from my keyboards on vacation, so the
anticipation is killing me! When I'm back I'll work on making WAV files
of the other Sysex patches.

Thanks for all this information!

Fun Fact: The DW8000 and its accessories were produced before Adobe's
PDF format and personal computers were commonplace, so the manuals were
only available as physical dead-tree paper printed version, in A4 paper
size, no less (normal for Japan and Europe). For a long time there were
only originals and Xerox-copied versions of it available, and people
were selling them (and still do) on eBay. I was working at Adobe when I
was putting together dw8000.com and used some hardware and software we
were developing for the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners to scan the DW8000 and
EX8000 manuals into PDF files complete with OCR for all the text
content. (Scanners had been around for some time, but good OCR to PDF
applications were pretty rare.) Shortly after I got dw8000.com up and
running and the manuals posted, I saw a DW8000 "rescue kit" CD for sale
on eBay. I bought one out of curiosity, as it advertised having the
patches and manuals on the CD. Sure enough, the PDF manuals were the
exact PDF files I had created at Adobe, and the patches are the same
patches I have posted on dw8000.com. eBay seller jsepeta still sells
them to this day for around $8.00 each. I don't really mind, as I
suppose it's a useful thing to have them as a CD, but it kind of bugs me
that people are selling the same data I provide for free on dw8000.com.
Still, at $8.00 it's more of a service than a profit-maker, but it still
bugs me. Anyway, my whole point with dw800.com was (and remains) to
provide everything possible at no cost. The synth is long out of
production and there's often no other way to get the data or
information. I suppose buying it on a CD is just another avenue to make
the information available, but it still bugs me a little bit! :-)
