> Does anyone precut roll paper prior to printing? I was thinking it might help reduce waste. 


I have tried using "cut-my-own" paper from roll paper.  It worked fine with my Epson 2200, but the Epson 4880 is terribly picky about paper sizes. Even when I very carefully cut paper to a standard size I had trouble getting the printer to believe that I had loaded the correct paper.

If you have access to one of the larger Logan mat cutters it is fairly easy to cut roll paper to size.  It is a pain in the neck, though, because you'll probably need to flatten the paper before you use it.
