The only other report of probably biological activity may have been caused by tap water being used.  I've heard (from Bob Zeiss) that sunny climates can have algae grow even in commercial CIS systems.  Keeping things in the dark might have merit. 

Let me know if you find a biocide that works well.  At least one name has been posted on this forum in the last year or so.
