A recent Epson experience that may or may not apply to a 1400: When I set up a new C88+ recently I tried to start off using partially full OEM color carts (the old printer died with ink left in the carts - I kept 'em) but the printer wouldn't even start its setup routine. Had to put full ones in, then it started up and ran fine. I know you can stick in partially full carts in normal use, but apparently the printer has to begin with full ones. At least on the C88 line. Just FWIW.
