Hi Mike,
This is an older unit.. You'll need some software to work with it ..that will also have a price.... these rigs usually are about 80 bucks on Ebay.. You might be better served holding off to get one that has some software. It won't do a thing until you get it.
Anyway, this stuff works.. (color management) If your serious about images, color correction and printing you will need to go there. Looks like your budget is lower or you like a bargain.. Regardless..I suggest maybe doing a post establishing a few ground rules from a budget standpoint and seeing what comes back for you..Then you could watch Craig List and eBay.. It's good your looking at it.

Subject: [Digital BW] Densitometer question
I came across a Craigslist sale of a mess of legacy computer equipment including a X-Rite Auto Scan Densotomiter
Model: DTP32R for $20. The seller has a power supply and "cables," and he thinks it works. There is no software or manual, but those are online at X-Rite. I'm not currently making profiles but it may be something I will grow into. So, my question is whether this is the device I should be picking up to make profiles someday? The price is obviously right but am I looking for too many headaches to get this to work with a Win7 system? Although I think it can be used without a direct connection to a computer, if I read some of the materials correctly. Thanks.
