Cross Posting - Please Think About It!

2002-02-27 by Nij

Hi all,

A quick note to you all to ask that you consider the use of cross-posting,
and ideally, avoid it ;) There are many people who do / have done this...
so please allow me to explain why it can be frustrating to _me_(!)

I receive emails from several lists, many of which have an 'overlap' of
readers interested in their related topics. To help me organise them, I use
Outlook rules to sort them into folders. Cross-posts generally break those
rules (because each cross-posted post now matches more than one rule),
forcing three of the same message into one folder, or stopping the rule work
altogether, or similar. Inevitably, my in-box becomes choked with stuff that
should be elsewhere. No, it's not a massive hassle to sort it out, but two
or three times a day and it can become a drag.

Therefore, I'd really like to ask you to consider NOT cross-posting... if
you really must send the same message to three different forums, could I ask
you to do so the <very much in quotes> 'proper' way, which is to send the
same email three times, each one to a different single group.

There are some more reasons why you might consider not cross-posting - or
even posting to more than one group - there is so much overlap between some
groups that literally hundreds of people could get your message twice or
more times! Is your question so important? Additionally, when you
cross-post, there is a risk that some people will 'Reply to All' this echos
their reply, which for example could be a Colour-mangers response of your
question, to all the other groups you posted to, which could include several
B*W forums etc etc!

So, I hope you understand that I understand no one meant any offence by
this... but at least file it under the other 'good ideas' for internet use
which include writing only one question in your emails, changing the subject
header appropriately, not SHOUTING, etc etc etc

If you have any response to this, please do so to me directly! at
nigel@...

At this time, I am only posting this to Digital BW - maybe I will follow up
on other groups in time ;)

Take care, and happy printing!

nij
