Digital BW, The Print

I notice some topics mention grain reduction in VueScan.

The current version has None, Slight, Medium and Heavy.

I can see the benefits of these, but is there any adverse affect of using them ?

My workflow is Vuescan with a Sprintscan 120, Picture Window Pro, PhotoZoom QTR and Epson 2100 and 1290.
