I haven't seen any reason to use 3rd party tools. I use smart sharpen for capture sharpening, along with masking if needed. I use high radius low amount unsharp masking for some mid-tone contrast, perhaps with a luminosity mask. Smart sharpen works well for creative sharpening, especially with masks. And Smart sharpening works well for output sharpening, again possibly with masks, faded to luminosity... You can do very controlled sharpening with Photoshop if you spend some time investigating it.
