I don't usually jump into these conversations, but, I would like to say that I found a book "Image Sharpening w/ Adobe PS, Camera Raw, and Lightroom" released by Real World books and written by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe very helpful in explaining the sharpening of images! The book is pretty technical (for me), but it seems to be on the $$$$ Give it a look, it cleared my head. I use smart sharpen for capture sharpening, along with masking if needed. I use high radius low amount unsharp masking for some mid-tone contrast, perhaps with a luminosity mask. Smart sharpen works well for creative sharpening, especially with masks. And Smart sharpening works well for output sharpening, again possibly with masks, faded to luminosity... You can do very controlled sharpening with Photoshop if you spend some time investigating it.
