Mike, ALL scans from desktop scanners must be sharpened. That's just the way it is. Only with the high end drum type scanners would you not
need it.  If you are only printing 8x8 prints they should be razor sharp!   I don't know anything about the HP printers, but the epson photo
printers will give you true photographic quality prints.
Are you sure you are scanning at 2400 DPI? If it is a true optical DPI, this resolution should easily give you an extremely sharp 16 x 20
inch print.
