Peter, Using the QTR Calibration Mode print is probably as good as it gets for comparing dmax values. I'd set it to the highest resolution (2880, uni-directional). On Arches the dmax will be reached close to 100. On my 7800 I actually get a bit higher if I also have MIS PK in the 100% patch. But, the QTR calibration mode by itself gives a good standard way to compare. Making sure the Eboni MK line is free of any other ink and fresh also matters, of course. Additionally, the particular batch of Arches can make a difference. There is no easy way to eliminate the variable. However, if you also do a dmax test on Epson Hot Press Natural or BW, that gives a readily available, good paper that is produced to tighter tolerances than the Arches.
