Peter, That would give the same kind of control over the final tone. I tried it both ways and the eye dropper gives very similar readings on the same pixel but not identical, must be a difference in the internal calculations. It would be interesting to carry the two all the way through to a print. I do like your approach better though, since it is easier to save what you have done as layers in the unflattened file. It seems there are always a dozen different ways to do something in Photoshop!
